Great seeing everyone last night and seeing some increased activity today. Something about the mouth parable that struck me was that I think we often worry about what goes into the mouth in the same way I think Jesus is warning (though I do find it somewhat cryptic like the disciples). But it seems like he's saying the pharisees worry so much about how others are affecting them rather than than looking internally. Kevin, you mentioned evil in movies and media, I was young not too long ago, I remember my parents having the same fear. I don't think there is much you can do to shelter people from our culture. I may be wrong, but maybe the better lesson is in this parable. Poop it out, as Jesus more eloquently puts it. But remind them, and ourselves, that what's important is what we do, and what our heart is, and what our fruit is. My neighbors got a new car stereo today, (and I live in the ghetto of Newberg) and they had it up LOUD, and every other word of the music they were playing was an F-bomb. My first reaction was like... what if my kids were out here? But the truth is, my kids are going to encounter a lot of F-bombs in their life, and a lot of people who have a different set of values. Granted, 6 years old is a little younger than I want to have to start talking about these sorts of things... but well, that's life, and I have to wonder what Jesus would have to say here. I think its a hard subject, but this isn't the first time I've gotten the feeling we have to look deeper, look at people less judgingly, and watch out more for the pharisees in our world than for those everyday sinners that live next door.
