After thinking about it more I think that regret for God is just not quite the same as it is for us. While god is outside of time, we aren't and regret just doesn't make sense. One thing I keep learning is that while god can do anything he wants, he uses us and nudges us. The bible tells us the stories of the most important or obvious players but how many others were failing or succeeding. Maybe there were other prophets than Samuel who didn't listen and eventually god turned to Samuel. Maybe I'm just getting wierd here. I guess I still don't really get it. This chapter got a little wierd too with the tormenting spirit from God. If it's from God then wouldn't it be a little odd to try to get rid of it? More to the point I suppose this is a story not a theological discussion. I'll just wait and see what happens. Wow, I'm realizing this is probably my worst post ever. But it's too late! Saul tries to get rid of his guilt through earthly means but the results are if course temporary. I think the lesson is that when something is won't in your life A. Focus on God, and B. Do it quickly because you will eventually anyway
