Man, verse 5 is one you hear a lot of course but today it struck me how difficult that actually is to do. Aside from the fact we make so many decisions in a day, should I buy something, how to spend our time, even what we put into our bodies for sustenance 3+ times a day. All of these things have spiritual consequences, but leaning not on our own understanding... its a tough concept. For example, aren't I leaning on my own understanding of the interpretation of this scripture? A very present debate the other night, New Earth vs. Evolution... At first I wanted to say, okay just trust God its a new earth cause thats what it says in Genesis, then I start thinking well am I leaning on my own understanding of my interpretation of Genesis when another fellow believer tells me that new earth creationism was a concept that was never part of the Jewish tradition or early church and didn't come about until a couple hundred years ago. No idea if thats true, no idea if it even matters, but still confuses me to no end on whose understanding I'm leaning on even when I'm reading the bible. The very concept of "Studying" the bible almost implies that we are leaning on our own understanding. Reading the interpretations of other individuals, who by their own power have also done research. The very pursuit of apologetics or books like the Case for Christ almost suggest we are leaning on our own understanding. But this whole argument makes me thing that I am misinterpreting this very verse about leaning not on your own understanding. All right, I'm in a downwardly trending mind spiral. Time to try and sleep again.
