I wonder that also Kevin. I confuse my kids with it all the time when they gripe about being last... but really I'm just pretending like I get it. In the first example, being last is just coincidentally better. They certainly weren't trying to last. In the second example he says its something we should do proactively. It points to service for sure, but I'm not sure what it means to be "First among you". To be first you have to be a servant, but whats the benefit of being first? What does that even mean?

I think for me sometimes the physical becomes a symbol of the spiritual. I am programmed to connect the two. When physically things suck my first instinct is to think I've done something wrong, haven't prayed long enough, hard enough, am experience some sort of natural consequence, etc. Deeper down, I don't believe this. But praying about those things is a double whammy, makes me feel more spiritually connected, offloads some anxiety and makes me feel like at least I've asked so that just in case asking is a prerequisite for God's help (I couldn't tell you if it is), its been done.

I may never know why blood sacrifice is required for atonement. Just a cosmic law? Or is it God's design? If so why did he design it so he had to become human and die the way he did? Whatever the answer, amen Tony, thank you Jesus for doing it.
