I see a lot of symbolism in the chapter, and some cool stuff, but I can't seem to figure out why didn't Moses pray with his hands down? I think the implication is clear that God interceded into the battle when Moses hands were up but relinquished his favor when Moses hands got tired. I just don't get it. Should I think descriptive and not prescriptive?

The Israelites didn't have water so they asked for it. Maybe not in the nicest way. Don't we do the same thing when we pray? Should we just wait and have faith? But then at the end of the chapter an entire battle hinges on Moses ability to keep his hand up in prayer. So I guess the moral is pray for what we want, but graciously and patiently.
